The Difference Between LGBTQ-Friendly and LGBTQ-Affirming Therapists

When you finally decide to look for a therapist, the last thing you want is to spend your first session explaining the basics of queer identity - or worse, sensing that your therapist is merely tolerating who you are. Yet this is a reality many LGBTQ+ people face when the distinction between two important terms gets blurred: LGBTQ-friendly and LGBTQ-affirming. These two labels sound similar, but in practice they describe very different experiences inside the therapy room. Understanding the difference can save you a lot of time, emotional energy, and disappointment. What Does LGBTQ-Friendly Mean? An LGBTQ-friendly therapist accepts queer clients without holding discriminatory views. They will not attempt to change your sexual orientation or gender identity.
